Sorry!!

I realized my translation of BUMP OF CHICKEN’s “Niji wo Matsu Hito” was really hasty and after I cross-referenced it with another one, I corrected my mistakes. (I usually always have the general idea, but mess it up by reading over the particles too quickly… what a difference they can make!)

So many apologies to the people who reblogged the incorrect one, but I changed it. (And I’ll change it again if I find more mistakes!)

BUMP OF CHICKEN - Niji wo Matsu Hito
(“people who wait for the rainbow”)

Lyrics & Composition: Fujiwara Motoo
Arrangement: BUMP OF CHICKEN

In my sleepless body, a sound leapt and ran
In the darkness from closing my eyes, I create my own color
I quietly embrace the pain of being unable to say anything, and sing
Worn out emotions are moving despite being broken

In the room surrounded by invisible walls
I am certainly touched by life

Oh… there’s no key for that door
Oh… there’s no key for that door
I just never knew how to open it because I never tried
Oh… I’ve been free all along

I quietly embrace the pain of coldness, and pray
Let’s warm our cold bodies
The sound knows every corner of our bodies trying to live
Even if we open our eyes, it’s the same, the color we create ourselves

When the invisible wall can be seen
There’s a beyond, I can see people

Oh… under the rain that calls forth the rainbow
Oh… everyone is under the same rain
We cannot connect well, but still we laugh
Oh… we’re waiting for the same rainbow

Oh… (a sound leapt and ran)
Oh… (sound leapt and ran)
Oh… (the sound knows every corner)
Oh… (of our bodies trying to live)

Possibly, we’ve realized, we were only scared
Oh… wherever we go, we’ll always be free

Oh… there’s no key for that door
Oh… there’s no key for that door
We cannot connect well, but still we laugh
Oh… we’re waiting for the same rainbow

This blog’s not dead, I promise!

Thought I’d jump on BUMP OF CHICKEN’s latest, which I love from a musical standpoint, since it’s so different from their previous work.

This one was a little strange in terms of the pronouns. I wasn’t quite sure whether “I” or “we” was implied, so I used my discretion with both where I thought appropriate.

It’s still typical Fujiwara in that there’s the metaphor, the layer of contemplation, but it’s somehow refreshing. I wouldn’t say it’s less loaded, but I think there’s a feeling of frankness in this via the wording? Like the lyrics are written less convoluted.

What a wonderful follow-up to firefly!

Pirokalpin - Inori no Hana
(“flower of prayer”)

Lyrics & Composition: Matsumoto Chieko
Arrangement: Pirokalpin

Flower of prayer
Someday we’ll laugh at and forgive one another and open up
Unseen by anyone, you bloom
Within the lightly clouding sky

With heavy feet and unbearable wounds
I looked over there

A planet that seems like it’ll disappear, black smoke
Yellow rain pounded on me

When I look over my shoulder, time disappears completely
Without fearing a fool’s errand, I continue searching

Flower of prayer
Someday we’ll laugh at and forgive one another and open up
Unseen by anyone, you bloom
Within the lightly clouding sky

An unseen cage, bound by chains
I can’t sever them

Twisted dreams, a faint light
Blown away by tomorrow’s wind

Sorrow is overflowing, but
I’m not afraid of despair, let’s go searching

Flower of prayer
Reality is struggling together and competing with each other to live
My dirtied hands and feet are impatient
It’s the way humans live

The end is approaching
At that time, a swaying illusion will appear before me
I’ll forgive everything, I am blooming
Within the clearing sky

Flower of prayer
Someday we’ll laugh at and forgive one another and open up
Though I realize this, I’m still helpless
This is human behavior

I wasn’t quite sure if this song was addressed to the mentioned ‘flower of prayer’ or not… my interpretation is that the speaker occasionally does, but is more musing on their own life and the nature of humanity. That’s why I think for the first few times the verb ‘bloom’ shows up, I think it’s talking about the flower, then towards the end the speaker is referring to him/herself.

Pirokalpin - Futoumei na Ketsumatsu
(“opaque end”)

Lyrics & Composition: Matsumoto Chieko
Arrangement: Pirokalpin

Let’s talk about the end of this trip
The journey does not continue on forever
There’s no trace of the mirage from that day
There’s no such thing as an utopia in this world

The earth has dried up in days of drought
Someone, like him, is realizing
There are days when the destination is indistinct
We’re much too far to retrace our steps

On with our talk about the end of this trip
The journey cannot continue on forever
After being utterly lost, I finally realized
The so-called utopia does not exist

Now, I’ve found a new path
I’ll straighten it and walk forward
The future days will accumulate significance
If I have the resolve, then there is nothing to regret

The times I advance and the times I am crushed
Surely, someone will discover
The significance of time as the days pass by
There is no one correct path for a person

A song about moving on in life.

I wasn’t quite sure if the song was indicating just the speaker or both the speaker and the listener were moving on, but I took it to mean that the speaker was leaving the listener behind, saying s/he found a new path in life and chose to move forward facing reality instead of being stuck believing in an illusion.

Why, oh why, do I have a knack of translating songs that fit my current situations so closely…

noanowa - Barairo no Dance
(“rose-colored dance”)

Lyrics: Yukko
Composition: Yukko & Gou
Arrangement: noanowa

Riding a disturbing sound, the darkness bloomed
Wandering zombies are ringing a bell
Ringing a bell

The flame in our hearts, where does it go?
Lifelessness is frightening, lies are overflowing
Overflowing

Dance, dance, don’t stop
Dance, dance, until we drop dead
Dance, dance, our souls will continue to dance
Ring, ring, we’re heating up
Gradually, remember
Steadily, we’re disappearing
I want to embrace that earnest light

It’s a ridiculous dance, but we don’t care
Enough about appearances
A lone cry is beautiful

Dance, dance, don’t stop
Dance, dance, until we drop dead
Dance, dance, our souls will continue to dance
Ring, ring, we’re heating up
Gradually, remember
Steadily, we’re disappearing
I want to embrace that earnest light

We’ve been painting a rose-colored life
Despite the horrible everyday, we still believe in it
That’s why we are still smiling
I never want to forget these feelings
Let the flames in our hearts burn even stronger

Dance, dance, don’t stop
Dance, dance, until we drop dead
Dance, dance, our souls will continue to dance
It’s not like that
This rose-colored dance
No matter where we are, these hands will reach out

Towards the light

Given the upbeat, swing-y nature of the song, I was expecting something full-on rejoicing but it turns out the lyrics are a bit darker than that (instead of dancing to celebrate, it’s dancing to overcome the darkness), but I like it better this way.

I’m not sure I understood the second verse that well. I personally think it’s trying to convey that people are too concerned with appearances and that the speaker has had enough of them, and would rather enjoy dancing alone than care about them.

Kylee - Anywhere

Lyrics: Tanaka Hanano
Composition: Taniguchi Naohisa
Arrangement: CHOKKAKU

I ran across your picture up on Facebook
I couldn’t help but smile and wanna see you
I wish we didn’t have to be so far away
Far away, far away, far away

A text from you always makes me happy
And so does your name on my caller ID
There’s something magical I feel between us
Magical, magical, magical

When you get lonely, don’t you worry
It’s okay ‘cause I’ll be here

I think about you, and become sad
Anywhere, we’re connected
I think about you, and become happy
We’re under the same sky

The world will forever keep expanding
Because the sun will forever keep shining
Miles away
We can try our best and laugh anywhere

When we’re apart we use telepathy
But when we both have time we talk like crazy
It’s not enough just to hear your voice
I’m missing you, missing you, missing you

When I get lonely, won’t you call me?
Say “it’s okay nothing to fear”

I think about you, and become sad
Anywhere, we’re connected
I think about you, and become happy
We’re under the same sky

The weather over there is surely always different
Being separated will surely make us stronger
Miles away
We definitely can try our best anywhere

Anywhere, anywhere

I think about you, and become sad
Anywhere, we’re connected
I think about you, and become happy
We’re under the same sky

I think about you, and become sad
Anywhere, we’re connected
I think about you, and become happy
We’re under the same sky

The world will forever keep expanding
Because the sun will forever keep shining
Miles away
We can try our best and laugh anywhere

Alright, alright, this isn’t a legit translation since half the stuff is English anyways, but this song has been stuck in my head all week and I wanted an excuse to post it.

It’s such a cute song about a long distance relationship, and it kind of reminds me of one of my best friends and her boyfriend.

I was wondering, where did you get the Dou Demo Ii song? (by Galileo Galilei) ive been looking for where to get the song, but i cant get their cd v n v

It’s hard to get the individual song, but I think you can find downloads of their “Parade” album floating around the internet, try looking for that, it’s on that album.

Galileo Galilei - Dou demo ii
(“I don’t care”)

Lyrics & Composition: Ozaki Yuuki
Arrangement: Galileo Galilei

The music is filled with essence
A fan in the back, back, back, back, back of the attic turns
Not thrown away, not out of use, not breathed in
That’s right, the amount of violence becomes a complete set, guided by the brain’s abilities
Not thrown away, not out of use, not breathed in

An unseen, unfallen color, the freestyle antithesis to the rock ‘n roll-er
There’s no way my heart isn’t pounding, naturally it comes and goes here
Make a show of your feelings, cry, and shout out

Because everyone is kind
I’ll swallow the key to the cage and you’ll want nothing to do with it

The noise, the exhilaration, the regret, how is it?
Hi-fi or lo-fi, whichever is fine
It’s okay to say it, over there is you, is me, is who, is who, is who, is what, is what, is what
What did you say?

An unseen, unfallen color, a roller wearing dirty sneakers on the wooden floor
No matter how we try we can’t sweep this clean, naturally there is a stalemate
If you say “what would be okay?” when you visit, I’ll just repeat that back at you

Just how many times do I need tell you it’s fine, it’s fine, it’s fine, it’s fine?!

I won’t watch, I won’t listen, I won’t go, I won’t write
I won’t laugh, I won’t cry, it won’t end, it won’t die
We can’t meet, we can’t meet, we can’t meet, we can’t meet
We can’t meet, we can’t meet, we can’t meet, we can’t meet

Ho boy, was this one a toughie. There were parts and phrases that really didn’t make sense, so I’d love it if a fluent Japanese speaker were to correct my translation.

The feeling I got from this was… well, ever been so downright frustrated with someone that you’re driven into a self-imposed apathy to cope with it? It almost seems like one person is frustrated with the other person for not being honest/straightforward about something and finally just giving up and having that ‘well we’re stuck in the same ‘ol cycle again and if you’re not going to break it I don’t give a fuck anymore’ moment. Or it could just simply be an argument between two people and neither side will back down. Those are my interpretations.

There’s a lot of tension going on, and at one point the speaker just snaps, hence the frantic final chorus where he basically tries to block out any further attempts by the other party to reach out to him.

As for the last part, 会えない (aenai) means “we can’t/we’re unable to meet” and while the meaning I’m more familiar with is the literal meaning, like “we (physically) cannot meet up”, I’m sure in this song it’s meant to be more metaphorical, like “we can’t see eye to eye”.

Pirokalpin - Metro

Lyrics & Composition: Matsumoto Chieko
Arrangement: Pirokalpin

My pulse seems to spread out,
A road extending to all sides
I gazed at it all, then decided on a destination

A mantle of shining silver
Solitarily creaks along the track
Advancing earnestly only on the chosen path

Which track number is correct?
Survive, and stay calm

Now, let’s start moving and jump on the first train
It starts from here, our histories connecting
I’m still half asleep, in this crowd of people
I won’t be swept away

The night that is dyed a dark gray
The salty drops of water
I tasted them all, I have arrived now

I don’t want to make excuses
Yet I have stayed this way as the years passed
A detour is not a bad thing

The lines of fate grow thicker
They have been changing, unnoticed

Now, recall the sunset of distant days
We barely made it in time, with the night wind on our side
I’m not asleep yet, in the subway
I’m wandering

Hey, let’s start moving, let’s ride the train again
Northwards and southwards, our eras are intersecting
The day-to-day is changing, in this crowd of people
I won’t be deceived

[ original Japanese lyrics here ]

It’s been a while since my last translation so I’m a bit rusty, but this one wasn’t too confusing so I think it’s mostly accurate.

It’s pretty abstract but I love songs of this type - the train/traveling motif as a metaphor for life has been used before, but it’s done really well here.

I find this song particularly relevant to my life right now.

RADWIMPS - Kizumono
(“wounded things”)

Lyrics, Composition, & Arrangement: Noda Yojiro

So that I cannot be disliked by anyone
So that I cannot be hated by anyone
I have lived desperately until today
That plan was a great success

I am no longer disliked by anyone
I am no longer hated by anyone
But if I were to turn around and see clearly
There wouldn’t be a single person by my side

It’s good this way
It’s best this way
This is what’s left in the world
The best, true kindness

For whose sake? For my sake?
For my sake that was for your sake
For my sake, that’s the trap of youth
Even if that’s all I can say about it
Today I still put up a front with hurtful words
Then, knowing for whose sake it is
Serves what purpose?

[ original Japanese lyrics here ]

This is one of my favorite songs from RADWIMPS’ Zettai Enmei Tour DVD (it hasn’t gotten a CD release yet).

It’s so beautiful in its simplicity.
